What is Prayer? The word in the original Greek includes the two concepts of ‘to’, ‘towards’ and ‘to pray for’, ‘wish for’. It is supplication, entreaty, petition addressed to God by which man invokes, prays to, entreats, hymns, glorifies and, in general, converses with his Omnipresent Creator, Father-God.
It is the uplifting of the soul and spirit of man to the Source of Creation and of his Going Forth. It is the attempt at contact of the infinitely small, the Divine Element existing within each man, with the Infinitely Great, with the Indescribable and Uncontainable which in human language is called God. It is the way in which man is helped to climb the steps of the Spiritual evolutionary ladder, the means by which he is purified, crushes the impulses of the passions, is patient, receives courage and strength, converses with the Angels, communicates with God, and is, finally, restored to the Father, Made God – Made Christ.
It is natural that for all of this there must exist a common point of contact, to link the infinitely small, man, with the Infinitely Boundless, God. And the point of contact is precisely what exists in every man of matter, in every human tabernacle, and gives life to it. It is, that is to say, the Divine Spark, the Divine ‘I’ of each man, his Breath, which is a part of the Whole God, Divine Essence, which came forth from God-Father-Creator, and which has the capabilities, in suitable conditions, of developing to such a degree that man becomes an Image and Likeness of his Creator, just as the seed of a tree, without being the tree, has the capability, in suitable conditions, of developing and becoming a perfect tree, like that from which the seed was taken.
This is the common point which unites man, who is still living in matter, with the Father-God, and Prayer is the means by which the suitable conditions are created, the appropriate powers are taken on, active negations are tied down, and man is united with the Source of his Creation and is Made God.
I would remind you of relevant passages from the New Testament which firmly establish our view and which I would ask you to remember every day:
“And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth” (Acts 17:26).
“For both he who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: I will declare Your name to My brethren” (Heb. 2:11).
